Shipping zone calculator
A shipping zone is the distance band between where a parcel ships from and where it goes, from Zone 1 (up to 50 miles) to Zone 8 (more than 1,800 miles). Enter two ZIP codes to estimate the USPS zone from the distance between their three-digit ZIP areas, or pick a Fulfillment Hub USA warehouse as the origin.

Zones change with the warehouse a parcel leaves from. Fulfillment Hub USA ships from five U.S. locations; to see how they cover the 150 largest metros together, open the shipping zone map.
| Warehouse | Miles | Est. zone |
|---|---|---|
| Dover, DE | 154 | 3 |
| Miami, FL | 1,098 | 6 |
| Houston, TX | 1,423 | 7 |
| Los Angeles, CA | 2,451 | 8 |
| South San Francisco, CA | 2,566 | 8 |
How the zone estimate works
- Take the first three digits of each ZIP code. USPS’s zone chart is organized the same way.
- Find the center of each three-digit ZIP area from Census ZIP code areas.
- Measure the straight-line distance between the two centers.
- Sort that distance into the USPS bands below.
770 to 100: 1,423 miles, Zone 7
| Zone | Distance |
|---|---|
| Zone 1 | Up to 50 miles |
| Zone 2 | 51–150 miles |
| Zone 3 | 151–300 miles |
| Zone 4 | 301–600 miles |
| Zone 5 | 601–1,000 miles |
| Zone 6 | 1,001–1,400 miles |
| Zone 7 | 1,401–1,800 miles |
| Zone 8 | More than 1,800 miles |
Zone is half of what a parcel costs; the other half is its billable weight. Work that out with the dimensional weight calculator. Shipping for the holidays? Check the holiday shipping deadlines, where the farthest zones need the earliest ground dates.
Common questions
How do I find the shipping zone between two ZIP codes?
Enter the origin and destination ZIP codes above for an estimate. For the official zone, open the USPS domestic zone chart, enter the first three digits of the origin ZIP code and find the range that holds the first three digits of the destination ZIP code, or use its ZIP code pair tab.
How are USPS shipping zones calculated?
USPS zones measure the distance between the origin and destination ZIP code areas and sort it into bands: Zone 1 is up to 50 miles, Zone 2 is 51 to 150 miles, Zone 3 is 151 to 300 miles, Zone 4 is 301 to 600 miles, Zone 5 is 601 to 1,000 miles, Zone 6 is 1,001 to 1,400 miles, Zone 7 is 1,401 to 1,800 miles and Zone 8 is more than 1,800 miles.
Why is my estimate different from the USPS zone chart?
This calculator measures a straight line between the centers of the two three-digit ZIP areas. The USPS chart lists the zone it assigns to each pair of three-digit ZIP areas, with some five-digit exceptions, so a destination near a band edge can land one zone higher or lower. The chart wins.
Do UPS and FedEx use the same zones?
Not necessarily. UPS and FedEx publish their own zone charts for each origin ZIP code, so the same destination can carry a different zone number with each carrier. Look up each carrier’s chart before you compare rates.
How do I lower the zones my orders ship to?
Ship from closer to your customers. Brands often split inventory between an East Coast and a West Coast warehouse so most orders travel fewer zones. Fulfillment Hub USA ships from Dover, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles (Commerce) and South San Francisco.
