Package size limits by carrier
Length plus girth is the longest side plus twice the width plus twice the height. USPS takes parcels up to 70 lb and 108 inches in length plus girth (130 inches for Ground Advantage), and UPS and FedEx Ground take up to 150 lb, 108 inches long and 165 inches in length plus girth.

Length plus girth: 36 + 2 × (20 + 18)
Over the limits for USPS Priority Mail and most services. USPS Ground Advantage: charged the oversized price from 108 to 130 in.
Where the box lands with each service
Each tape runs from 0 to 180 inches of length plus girth. The marker is your box.

How to measure length and girth
- Measure all three sides at their widest points, including any bulge in the box.
- Take the longest side as the length.
- Add the other two sides together and double them. That is the girth: the distance around the box.
- Add the length and the girth together, and compare the weight and the longest side with each carrier’s limits as well.
36 + 2 × (20 + 18) = 112 in
Staying under the limits is only half the cost. Big, light boxes are usually billed on their size before they reach a limit, so check the dimensional weight calculator as well.

Carriers also add handling charges for long, heavy or awkward packages that are still under these maximums. Check each carrier’s current rate guide before you choose a box.
When the box is too big
Over USPS’s limits, a parcel can’t be mailed; over UPS’s, it draws an over-maximum charge. Rather than fight the limits, ship heavy and bulky goods as LTL freight. The pallet calculator shows how many cartons fit on a pallet and how tall the load gets.
Bringing large cartons in from overseas? Size the shipment with the CBM calculator, then see how they load with the container loading calculator.
Common questions
How do I calculate length plus girth?
Measure the longest side: that is the length. Add the other two sides together and double the result: that is the girth. Length plus girth is the two added together. A 36 × 20 × 18 inch box is 36 + 2 × (20 + 18) = 112 inches.
What is the largest box USPS will ship?
USPS takes domestic parcels up to 70 lb and 108 inches in length plus girth. USPS Ground Advantage takes parcels up to 130 inches, and charges its oversized price for those between 108 and 130 inches.
What are the UPS size limits?
UPS takes packages up to 150 lb, 108 inches long and 165 inches in length plus girth. A package over 130 inches in length plus girth, or longer than 96 inches, is a Large Package and is billed at a minimum of 90 lb.
What are the FedEx size limits?
FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery take packages up to 150 lb, 108 inches long and 165 inches in length plus girth. FedEx Express allows up to 119 inches of length. FedEx Ground Economy is limited to 70 lb and 130 inches in length plus girth.
What if my package is over the limits?
A package over a carrier’s maximum either can’t ship with that service or draws an over-limit charge, depending on the carrier. Heavy or bulky goods often ship more cheaply as LTL freight on a pallet.
